UFC 70: Nations
Collide – Manchester, England – Manchester Evening News Arena – April 21, 2007
Gabriel Gonzaga ruined UFC’s plans to deliver a Mirko Cro
Cop-Randy Couture title fight.
Gonzaga faced Cro Cop in the main event of UFC 70 to
determine Couture’s next challenger. Cro Cop, one of the top stars who had
migrated from PRIDE, was the favorite.
However, Gonzaga knocked out Cro Cop with a head kick, which is
usually Mirko’s specialty, to claim the title match for himself.
Michael Bisping thrilled the British fans with a TKO win
over “The King of Rock & Rumble” Elvis Sinocic in Round 2.
Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski defeated future
champion Fabricio Verdum by unanimous decision.
UFC 70 aired on pay-per-view in the United Kingdom and
Ireland. Spike TV aired the show in the United States several hours later.
Also on the main show, Lyoto Machida beat David Heath by unanimous
decision; and Cheick Kongo beat Assuerio Silva by majority decision.
The preliminary bouts featured three submission finishes.
Terry Etim beat Matt Grice with a guillotine choke at 4:48; Jess Liaudin defeated
Dennis Siver with an armbar; and Junior Assuncao used a rear-naked choke
to beat David Lee in Round 2.
Other pre-show results included Alessio Sakara over Victor
Valimaki by TKO at the 1:44 mark; and Paul Taylor over Edilberto de Oliveira by
TKO in Round 2.
