Finale – Las Vegas, Nev. – The Pearl at the Palms – June 23, 2007
Nate Diaz won The Ultimate Fighter Season 5’s lightweight tournament,
beating Manny Gamburyan.
Diaz won in the second round when Gamburyan was unable to
continue due to a dislocated shoulder.
The season consisted entirely of lightweights, with former
lightweight champions Jens Pulver and BJ Penn serving as coaches.
In the main event coaches’ fight, Penn forced Pulver to
submit to a rear naked choke in Round 2. Penn avenged the first loss of his
career to Pulver at UFC 35 five years earlier.
Thales Leites improved his record to 11-1, beating Floyd
Sword by submission to a kata-hajime choke at the 3:50 mark.
“El Matador” Roger Huerta won the Spike TV opener of over
Doug Evans by TKO in the second round.
In a pre-show fight, Gray Maynard and Rob Emerson fought to
a no-contest. Maynard knocked himself out on a takedown attempt as Emerson was
submitting due to a rib injury.
The other preliminary bouts also featured TUF 5 competitors.
Joe Lauzon beat Brandon Melendez with a triangle choke in
Round 2. Cole Miller beat Andy Wang by TKO in 70 seconds.
Matt Wiman defeated Brian Geraghty by TKO at the 2:09 mark;
and Leonard Garcia beat Allen Berube at 4:22 with a rear naked choke.
