UFC on Versus 1: Vera

Jon “Bones” Jones returned to the win column, beating Brandon
“The Truth” Vera in the main event of UFC’s first show on the Versus network.
Jones blasted Vera with an elbow to the face and followed up
with punches to win by TKO at the 3:19 mark. Jones bounced back from a
disqualification loss to Matt Hamill three months earlier.
Future UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos knocked
out Gabriel Gonzaga at the 3:53 mark.
UFC drew 1.24 million viewers in its debut on Versus, which
used to be the Outdoor Life Network and is now NBC Sports Network.
Cheick Kongo forced Paul Buentello to tap out to strikes in
Round 3, foiling “The Headhunter’s” attempt to gain his first UFC win in four
years.
Alessio Sakara of Italy opened the telecast with a TKO win
over James “The Sandman” Irvin in just over three minutes.
Colorado native Brendan Schaub beat Chase Gormley on the
pre-show by TKO in 47 seconds.
In lightweight action, Clay “The Carpenter” Guida defeated
Shannon Gugerty by submission to an arm triangle choke in Round 2.
Darren Elkins beat Duane “Bang” Ludwig by TKO in 44 seconds
due to an ankle injury.
John “Doomsday” Howard knocked out Daniel Roberts in just
over two minutes for his fourth UFC win in a row. Also at welterweight, Mike Pierce
won a unanimous decision over Julio Paulino.
At light heavyweight, Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko won
a split decision over local favorite Eliot Marshall. Jason Brilz beat Eric “Red”
Schafer by unanimous decision.
