UFC 131: dos Santos
vs. Carwin –Vancouver, B.C., Canada – Rogers Arena- June 11, 2011
Junior dos Santos didn’t get a chance to face Brock Lesnar,
but a win over Shane Carwin at UFC 131 kept Junior in the title picture.
While dos Santos was waiting for heavyweight champion Cain
Velazquez to return from injury, he coached the 13th season of The
Ultimate Fighter against Lesnar. Their coaches’ fight didn’t happen due to
Lesnar’s struggles with diverticulitis.
Junior scored a unanimous decision over Carwin in the UFC
131 main event.
Kenny Florian won the co-main event over Diego Nunes by
unanimous decision. Florian earned a featherweight title fight against Jose Aldo.
Dave Herman beat Jon Olav Einemo by TKO in the second round.
Mark Munoz scored his third win in a row with a unanimous decision over Demian
Maia.
Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone opened the PPV with a unanimous
decision over the debuting Vagner Rocha of Brazil.
Spike TV showed a pair of preliminary fights. Sam Stout
knocked out “The Master of Thug Jitsu” Yves Edwards at the 3:52 mark.
Chris Weidman beat Jesse Bongfeldt with a guillotine choke
in the final seconds of Round 1.
On the Facebook prelims, Darren Elkins beat Michihiro
Omigawa by unanimous decision.
“The Mexicutioner” Joey Beltran beat Aaron Rosa by TKO in
the third round. Nick Ring beat James Head by submission to a rear naked choke
in Round 3.
Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier defeated the debuting Jason
Young by unanimous decision. Krzysztof Soszynski won in the same way over Mike
Massenzio.
